Introduction:

Bill of lading is the document that is provided to the shipper which is taken as a proof that the said goods are uploaded on the ship and the receiver has to present the bill of lading to receive the goods on the destination port without which the goods cannot be delivered to any person. But the bill of lading could be lost or damaged during the shipment, as a result of which the shipper will have to get a duplicate bill issued by the shipping company so that the goods could be delivered to the right receiver.

Steps involved in How to obtain a duplicate BL if original bill of lading lost

Step 1– if you have lost the bill of lading, then you should approach the concerned authority to issue a duplicate bill in lieu of the lost bill.

Step 2– the shipper is required to execute a letter of indemnity, stating that if the said lost bill is recovered then the carrier is not to be held responsible, and the aforesaid letter need to be signed by the shipper or his legal representative.

Step 3– the shipper has also to take the responsibility of returning the lost bill if found. The shipper indemnifies all consequences on the loss of the bill of lading

Conclusion:

The duplicate bill could be issue in lieu of the original lost bill, provided that the shipper undergoes all the legal formalities involved in getting the new duplicate bill issue, and the shipper also has to bear the consequences in case the original bill is found or recovered.
